EDUARD OLIVELLA

"Ven a casa".

Tracing Traces
Can translate of the English in "Resseguint les traces".
This is what wanted to do an Austrian with what I clash for the streets of Portbou does a few Septembers, to finals of the month, while it did memory of the death of Walter Benjamin.
Hans Fleischner, that is as well as names the Austrian, is son of a brigadist that came to struggle for the Republic when had only 22 years, the year 1937.
Hans told to see if it could fill the silences, tracing traces, that did his father while it related his experiencies to the Spanish Civil War. Hans's father was, to his country, an activist of left and the failure of the Spanish epic story left it discouraged. To him and to the thousand of youngsters coming from everywhere that arrived with the hopes to stop the fascism. Next it goes to have to escape of his own country for his double condition of Jewish and comunist.
Between Hans and I was established a fast tuning: both photographers and of the same age. Community of thought and of purposes. Talks between fried small fish and memorial conferences. An anecdote of a shooting where I worked unleashed everything. See what has happened...

About And Together

With
EDUARD OLIVELLA

The meeting between us started out with a very innocent question.

‘What are you doing here?

That was end of September 2013 in Portbou, Catalunya.
A few days later we met in Barcelona again.
Eduard introduced some galleries to me and showed me the city.

Just in passing he told me about a TV series, he had worked for as a still
photographer and just as casually he told me, how for one scene the
director had asked him to act like a war photographer.

He was made up and dressed to look the part, was given a 1930’s Leica
to walk around with and act like a photographer, taking photographs.

Eduard thought, I am a photographer, put in a roll of black and white
film and took photographs, like in a real life situation.

The result were photographs as if they had been taken in 1938.

‘I want to see those negatives’, I said.

‘Come to my place’. Address, Metro stop, some directions and the next
day I was on my way.

Eduard switched on the light box, placed the negatives on it and let me
have a look.

I was born 1948, so was Eduard, but the Civil War in Spain was part of
our lives, if not in equal parts, then still very much so, with a maybe
quite significant difference.

I heard from my father stories, he had experienced, seen, heard about,
while being in Spain from 1937 till 1939, as a member of the
International Brigades.

Eduard was surrounded by silence.

When I saw those negatives from a reenacted scene, showing the effects
of the bombing of Barcelona in 1938, I just said,
‘That must be a movie!

In March 2014 I went back to Barcelona and we started the movie.
In the process of doing so and talking to people, more and more doors
opened and windows, too and of course more and more people joined us
in making this movie.
We just filmed our last interview and are starting with an offline edit,
with a few more short clips to be filmed, now and in early summer.

One very important window opened already last spring.

A TV station showed interest in the movie and as part of the European
Media Development we are looking for a partner to make it happen.
Amsterdam came to my mind and the links are many, to make this
movie into a full length documentary, with some fictional enactments.

The International Brigades are an obvious link and the history books
show that. I do not have to make up stories.
One fictional and bringing together element, could be the soundtrack.
A string quartet from Amsterdam made up of young people.
Playing various compositions.
The one you hear on the teaser and of course also Pablo Casals and
possibly Eugene Drucker.

The questions in the interviews can be summed up as follows:
# relating to the field of photography and films
# interest in and knowledge of the history of The Spanish Civil War
# first time having seen or read material re: The Spanish Civil War
# reaction seeing the photographs taken by Eduard Olivella during the
TV series, depicting a war scene
# on myths and icons
# on truth and reality, memory and remembrance
# about manipulation and honesty
and above all:
# opinion on the use of documents on the Spanish Civil War (graphics, writings, personal, official) and historical sites, such as battlegrounds, fosas, destroyed buildings, for the construction of the history and reconstruction of the same, in literature, film, television.
It forms the main core of this movie.

People interviewed were:

a scenario writer, art director (of the TV series Eduard worked for and
was acting in), historian at the CRAI Biblioteca del Pavelló de la República , photographer working with historic photographs among others, professor of photography, young historian working as guide in a bomb shelter, photo event producer, historian turned social worker for children and a poet, with a lot of stories and traces from the past.

Hans Fleischner, Barcelona 2015

--------------

In beginning to look for trace them of all what happened those years found many documents of the period, but trace them more attractive for us were those that did evident in novels, series for tv, films, works of researchers, associations to preserve the memory and the places where happened the facts... And also remembrance direct of the oldest people that lived it and related it to sons and grandsons. Daily writings for common people during the days of bombardment.
Of all the witnesses and contributions listened and recorded arise our fundamental reflection: how the current creators use all these trace to create his products and like this practical forms the idea of the facts that can have the people of now. How they form the myths around the Civil War. What happens with the memory, with the memories;  the building of the history; the reality and the truth, the invention and the fiction...
To order all the materials we take as a central point the famous bomb of the Coliseum than together with the wall of St Felip Neri has become a symbol of the atrocity of those days.
In the personal field have been able to imagine almost moment to moment the troubles of my family, especially my mother's ones, then lived in a place of Barcelona that has showed central in our narration..
Now we present a first setting of a small part of the materials in the hope of can access to a funding and some aids to do it of definite shape.
